An Even Longer Day
By Rye Guy
As the sunlight creeps in through the window, it beams across the room and
shines directly on the bed. Leela stirs form under the covers to try and get the
sun out of her eye. She pulls the cover over her head, but the light is too bright
and shines through her thin sheet. She tosses the cover off of her and it lands
at her ankles. She yawns and stratches her arms up toward the ceiling. As she
rests them on her body, however, she looks down and realizes that she is naked.
She quickly sits up.
"What? How did this happen? I don't remember getting in bed naked."
She thinks for a moment. "Actually, I don't remember anything about last
A golden light from the end table gets her attention. She sees the locket on
the table by her photo of Fry. She reaches over, picks up the locket, and opens
it. Upon reading the message and seeing the picture of Fry and her parents, that's
when it hits her.
"Oh!" she exclaims happily, "I remember now. He gave me this
as an anniversary gift of our meeting. But what happened after that?" She
rubs her eye. "I can't remember anything after that."
She looks over and sees one of her boots on the floor. She stands and stops
from the terrible headache.
"...hangover, guess I drank too much."
She bends down and picks up the boot. She then sees the rest of her clothes
scattered all over the floor, making a trail to the other end of the bed. She
picks up her other boot, then her pants, her tank top, and then she sees: "Fry's
jacket?" she gasps. What's this doing here?" She picks it up and holds
it tight. She begins looking all around; at the bed, the locket, his jacket, and
down at her naked body. "Did we? God, I wish I could remember!" She
falls to her knees. "Oh Fry, did we? If we did, why did you leave? Are you
ashamed of me?" She begins crying into his jacket as she falls onto the side
of the bed.
At Planet Express...
Amy's busy doing some maintenance work on the ship's engine using a small blow
torch. As the sparks fly from the engine and rain down onto the floor, Bender
lies down and begins catching sparks in his mouth.
Amy turns off the torch, removes her goggles and descends down the ladder.
Not looking to where she's going, she accidentally steps on Bender. Her foot slips
and she falls on top of him.
"Hey, get offa me!" he shouts.
"Bender! What are you doing down here?"
"I was trying to get a little snack before work started."
She gets up and mutters a Japanese curse under her breathe as she dusts herself
off. "Well, next time watch where you're eating."
Bender gets up. "Yeah, yeah, whatever."
He walks off to the lounge while Amy hangs the torch back on the Professor's
tool rack on the wall. The door slides open and Fry steps in wearing his blue
jeans and white shirt. She peers over at him nervously. "Hey, Fry, where's
"My what?" He looks at his arms. "Oh, um, I guess I left it
at home or something," he answers glumly.
He heads to his locker. Amy watches him as he sits on the bench with a melancholy
expression. There was something in his voice that seemed out of place. She had
only seen him like this at times when he had his heart broken by a certain captain.
She walks over to him and puts her hand on his shoulder. "Something wrong?"
"Wrong? No, everything's fine."
"You don't sound like everything's fine."
"I'm just tired; I was out late last night."
"At the New Year's Eve party in Town's Square; I saw you and Leela."
His head shoots up and he quickly looks up at her. "When did you see us?"
he asks apprehensively.
She shrugs. "Around eleven or so. You were heading into Ozorgnax's."
"Oh...did you see us again anytime after that?"
Leela walks warily down the street. Wearing Fry's jacket over her usual attire.
Her head is pounding. "I hope those aspirins kick in soon."
As she walks by two guys loading some furniture into a moving truck, she hears
one of them calling the other. "Hey Bill! Look, it's the Cyclops from Ozorgnax'a
Bill looks up. "Oh yeah! Come on baby! Let me get another gander at those
party balloons of yours!"
She tries to ignore them at first but then think about what they're saying.
She freezes and turns around "What are you talking about?"
They look at each other for a second and then grin. "Last night you danced
topless for us in the bar."
"Yeah, then you threw your bra into the crowd. I caught it," boasts
Overtaken with disbelief, she can't move. "No, you're lying! I would never!"
Bill grins mischievously. "Oh yeah?" He reaches into the pocket of
his overalls and pulls out a bra. She snatches it from him, examines it, and sees
that it is hers.
"Oh God, no...Fry..."
She turns and begins running as fast as she can.
"What's her problem?"
She's running, leaving a trail of tear drops behind her. "Fry!" she
cries in her mind. "What happened last night?"
Fry sits at the conference table, slumped over the table, his face buried in
his folded arms. He sits there in silence for a moment but suddenly feels something
poking his head. He swats away a wooden pole and looks up to see the Professor.
"Wake up, Fry!"
"I'm awake Professor, I was just..." he sighs, "...thinking."
"We don't have enough time for you to think right now."
"Why? What's going on?"
"We've got a delivery to make today and Leela isn't here yet."
"Don't worry. She'll be here, hangover or not."
"She'd better be." The Professor turns to leave. When he does, the
pole swings around form behind him and hits Fry in the back of the head.
The door fly open as Leela dashes in and jumps
in the elevator. It takes her to the second floor. She darts down the hall at
full speed and enters the conference room where she sees Fry rubbing the back
of his head.
He looks over his shoulder. "Leela?"
She stands in the doorway as he stands from his chair. The two peer into one
another's eyes in silence for what feels like an eternity. The entire conference
room is still and empty. All that can be heard is the frantic breathing of Leela
and the pound of her heart.
She fells the invisible shackles holding her in position shatter as she takes
a step forward. Her embarrassment at what she found out a few minutes ago weighs
her down making each step feel like she carrying a heavy military pack on her
back. She finally reaches Fry. All she can bring herself to do is hug him tightly.
He gently puts his hand to her chin and lifts her face to his. He sees the tear
marks on her cheeks.
"Leela, you've been crying."
"Please, tell me what happened last night. I found your jacket on my bedroom
floor then these two guys outside had my bra from something that happened at Ozorgnax'a
last night. But I don't believe it. I can't even remember anything after you giving
me this locket." She grasps it firmly in her right hand.
He looks into her eye. "Nothing happened last night. You just had a few
too many Slurmwiesers. That's all."
"Then why was your jacket on my floor?"
"I put it on you to keep you warm on the walk home."
"But I was naked when I woke up. I thought that we..."
"Are you lying?"
"Leela, I know I'm not the most charismatic guy in the world, but I would
NEVER take advantage of you when you're drunk."
She grabs his shoulders. "Fry, there's something else. You're hiding something
from me. Please tell me; what really happened last night?"
He sighs heavily. "Sit down and I'll tell you."
They sit and he goes on to explain everything that happened the previous night.
From the jerk in the crowd, to her meeting Terry in the bar, her getting drunk
and stripping, even her trying to seduce him at her apartment. Leela is in shock
from all of this. Finding it hard to believe that it was true, but the look in
his eyes and the tone of his voice told her it was all true.
"...the you fell asleep," he ends.
"I had no idea I was capable of that."
"Neither did I."
"Tell me Fry, you had all these opportunities to get what you've wanted
for so long. Why didn't you take me?"
He shrugs. "I guess I have too much respect for you to do something like
He stands. "All I ever wanted all these years was for you to say that
you loved me too." He turns and begins walking to the elevator. "But
I guess the only way to hear you say it is while you're drunk." He gets in
"Wait!" she calls but the doors have already shut. She falls into
her seat and begins to cry. "Fry, I'm so sorry. But I really do love you."
"Leela!" shouts the Professor from the docking bay. "Get down
here! You have a delivery!"
She wipes her tears with the sleeve of Fry's jacket which he is still wearing.
"Pull yourself together. You'll have plenty of time to think about it
later," she assures herself. If only it worked.
A while later, in the ship which is flying through the gulf of space; Fry sits
in the mess hall snacking on a small bag of chips. He's so lost in thought that
he doesn't even hear the door open behind him. He then feels someone rest his
jacket over his shoulders. He turns in his seat to see Leela behind him. He smiles
when he sees the locket around her neck.
She smiles nervously. "It's a...it's a nice jacket."
"It, um, it breathes real well."
"It's cotton. I bought it back in 1998 at a yard sale..."
An awkward silence fills the room. He slips the jacket on as she sits next
"Fry, I've been thinking and I'm sorry about last night."
"No need to apologize. I know being out with me made you drink."
"No, it wasn't you; it was me. I've just had so much on my mind recently
and when you gave me this locket I just couldn't control myself."
"Leela, I have a question? That picture of my by your bed. Why do you
"Oh, that." She sighs. "Remember when that Space Bee stung us
and I was in a coma for two weeks?"
"How could I forget?"
"Well, there's something I didn't tell you about those two weeks. In my
coma, I had this continuing nightmare where you died from the sting instead of
me." His eyes widen as he leans in to listen to more. "Your spirit kept
contacting me in my dreams but everyone thought I was crazy. Soon, I realized
that I would rather give up everything I had in this world just to be with you
again..." she grabs his hand and squeezes it, "...where I was truly
Fry is left speechless. She stares into his eyes and smiles.
"Since then I've kept that picture by my bed so I'll always see it and
think of you before I go to sleep."
"Oh Leela..." tears begin to swell in both of their
"I love you Fry. I should have told you before."
She pulls him close and kisses him passionately. They sit there, locked in
that kiss for a moment that felt as though time was standing still just for them.
The entire universe ceased to be. All that existed at this moment was them. They
could only see each other's eyes; they could only feel each other's lips.
They slowly pull back and gaze lovingly into one another's eyes. Leela begins
to cry happily.
"I'm so sorry Fry. I'm so sorry for making you wait so long-"
He places one finger on her lips and smiles. "Don't apologize for bringing
They become locked in another tender kiss. Both their hearts ready to burst
from the sheer emotion they are each experiencing at this moment. But each are
satisfied in knowing that this was right. They feel as though, somehow, someway,
love was made just for them. Love is one soul inhabiting two bodies. And now,
these bodies were becoming one and the soul is made complete. And somewhere, deep
in the universe, a small three-eyed furry creature stares up to the heavens above
